Research: How to make a short film

In the video, the host, Ryan Connolly, discussed some important things to consider in a short film. The ones that stood out to me most were- emotion/ conflict, climax, jump scares, limited resources, storyboards and scripts, tone (lighting and costume), safety , sound (and not too much or too little dialogue), and a good relationship with your crew. Emotion and conflict are best because they add to the story and allow a relationship and understanding amongst the audience and the film. The climax and the emotion work hand in hand because they give life and a deeper understanding of the story. Climax either builds tension or releases it. A jump scare here and there just keeps the audience engaged. In a short film, he budget wont be the same as a full length blockbuster type of film. Your budget will be very limited including your resources. Location, props, casting, etc... So when creating a short film, it's important to know you wont have all the resources you want, but you'll always have what you need. Storyboards help you bring the story to life. When you have everything drawn out, it's easy to see what you'll need to add or take away. It's also just keeps things organized. Scripts are also a key organization tool since they keep the actors from messing up the dialogue and the story. The tone of the film is key. The lighting and costume must match the story line. There's no point in having the actors dressed as pilgrims and have bight, high key lighting if the film is a murder mystery set in the 90's. It doesn't make sense, and it'll leave your audience very confused. Everyone's safety should be your top priority. You never know what can go wrong so it's vital to keep a first aid kit by you. Just in case. Sound is important in just about every film. You have to make sure the audience can hear you. You can have the greatest film but if nobody can hear you there is no point. A good relationship with your crew is one of the most important things. Everything will be limited in a short film including your cast/ crew; so it's important to have a good, established relationship with everyone because these are the people you'll be working with and there my not always be a backup cast.
